What I'm doing now
Updated June 2026 — near Pickering, on the edge of the North York Moors.
What is a now page?
Book 7 is in the pipeline, but my focus the last month or so has shifted so it's coming along more slowly. Still worth a mention, Dadsnet published an article I wrote about them a little while ago.
Root is the 'God mode' user on Linux servers for anyone that doesn't know. Oh, Linux, well you've heard of Windows (on computers right?), well Linux is more like the screens of seemingly random characters (green on black) in the old Matrix films with Keanu Reeves. Anyway looking after Linux servers is what my career was built on. Who cares about Linux? Well the Google and Amazon Cloud services are at least 80% Linux, and guess what, even Microsoft (yea, as in Microsoft Windows) - their cloud services are more than 50% Linux based too. The top supercomputers are all Linux, and almost all of the top web servers in the world run Linux. So yea, I'm getting back to doing that. Find me on GitHub, and a demo of the first project I'm building can be viewed here
And that is why I'm building the project mentioned above. Google emails me every month or so to tell me my 150GB is almost full. I'm still taking photos (these are just phone photos), mainly of my children, and if I don't do something soon things will stop being backed up. So I've been putting together my own version of Google Photos that I can host on my own server (so I won't run out of space) that can index the images like Google does (using their own service it returns a list of words that are stored in a database, like Sunset, Forest, Car, Red, Sky etc), you can search by words, by date, or by coordinates - which is how I use Google Photos. The demo (linked above) is working, there's some more techy stuff to do at the back, but it's working.
And finally, the warm(er) weather is here (we had a thunderstorm earlier and it's actually been a bit chilly recently) but generally warmer. My favourite season. So making the most of every opportunity to take my children to interesting places - waterfalls, ancient ruins, beaches, you get the picture.
